History of Malawi’s flag

Colonial period

Before independence, the territory that is now Malawi was administered by Britain under several different colonial entities. These included the British Central Africa Protectorate, Nyasaland, and the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland.

During these periods, the territory used British colonial flags and ensigns.

Adoption of the independence flag

On 6 July 1964, Nyasaland became independent and adopted the name Malawi. A new national flag was introduced featuring the black, red, and green stripes with a rising sun.

The design reflected both Pan-African symbolism and the broader political context of African independence movements during the 1960s.

Flag change and restoration

In 2010, the Malawian government introduced a new flag that replaced the rising sun with a full white sun and altered the order of the stripes. The change was controversial and widely criticized within the country.

After the death of President Bingu wa Mutharika in 2012, the new government under President Joyce Banda supported restoring the original independence flag. Parliament passed legislation reinstating the earlier design on 28 May 2012.

The independence flag adopted in 1964 has remained Malawi’s national flag since then.
