A metropolitan area generally includes a central city along with surrounding suburbs and communities that are economically connected to it. Because those boundaries are much larger, rankings of US metropolitan areas can look considerably different from rankings of individual cities.

The population figures come from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Vintage 2025 Population Estimates, released in May 2026. Vintage 2025 is the most recent completed Census population-estimate series for US cities and towns.
