History of Monaco’s flag

Origins of the Grimaldi colors

The red and white colors of Monaco’s flag are derived from the heraldic colors of the House of Grimaldi, the ruling family of Monaco. These colors have been associated with the Grimaldi family since at least the fourteenth century.

Rise of the Grimaldi dynasty

Monaco’s history became closely linked with the Grimaldi family in 1297, when Rainier Grimaldi captured Monaco’s fortress during the conflicts between the Guelphs (supporting the Pope) and Ghibellines (supporting the German Emperor).

In 1342, Charles Grimaldi proclaimed himself Lord of Monaco, establishing the Grimaldi family’s long-term rule over the principality.

Adoption of the current flag

The current national flag was adopted by Prince Charles III on 4 April 1881, replacing an earlier flag that incorporated a version of Monaco’s coat of arms.

The design retained the traditional Grimaldi colors.

Modern use

The Constitution of Monaco defines the national flag as two equal horizontal stripes of red and white, with red above white.
