Key geography facts

1. Tonga consists of about 170 islands, with the majority divided into three island groups: Ha‘apai in the center, Vava‘u in the north and Tongatapu in the south.

2. Volcanic summits of undersea mountains form the chain of the Tonga islands, and their eruptions shape how we see the islands today.

3. Some of the islands are known as “high islands” because they have been raised well above sea level due to volcanic activity.

4. The highest point in Tonga is on Kao at 1,033 meters (3,389 feet), an island and stratovolcano in the Haʻapai island group.

5. Tongan residents face a constant battle with the climate crisis due to the threat of erosion and rising sea levels.

Tonga is south of Samoa and lies roughly midway between New Zealand and Hawaii. It’s also near the major island groups of Fiji and Niue.

Tonga major cities and towns

Nuku’alofa – The capital city of Tonga, located on the main island of Tongatapu. It is the political and economic hub of the country.

Lapaha and Takamotonga – these are important historical villages in Tonga, located in Tongatapu. They were part of the ancient capital of the Tongan Empire, known as Mu‘a.

Neiafu – A key town located in Vava’u, known for its charming old harbor and as a popular spot for whale watching and tourism.

Haveluloto – A town close to Nuku’alofa, part of the urban area surrounding the capital.

Vaini – Another town on the island of Tongatapu, known for its lush landscapes, located about 13 kilometers (8 miles) from the capital city, Nuku’alofa.

Houma – Houma is a village recognized for its cultural significance and proximity to natural landmarks like the Mapu a Vaea (blowholes), a famous natural attraction where ocean waves create impressive water sprays through coastal rock formations.

Pangai – The administrative and main town of the Ha’apai group of islands in Tonga. It is located on Lifuka Island, one of the larger islands in the Ha’apai group.
