Flag of Morocco (1666–1915)

Before the addition of the green star, Morocco used a plain red flag. This red banner was associated with the ruling Alawi dynasty.

History of Morocco’s flag

Early use of the red flag

For centuries Morocco used a plain red banner as its national flag. The color red became closely associated with the ruling Alawi dynasty, which came to power in the 17th century.

Over time, however, the simple red flag became difficult to distinguish from other red flags used by ships and states.

Introduction of the green star

To distinguish the Moroccan flag from others, Sultan Yusef issued a dahir (royal decree) on 17 November 1915 introducing a green pentagram in the center of the red flag.

The star, often called the Seal of Solomon, was added as a national symbol and remains a central feature of the flag today.

Use during the protectorate period

While Morocco was under French and Spanish protectorates in the early 20th century, the red flag with the green star continued to be used on land. However, its use at sea was restricted.

After independence

When Morocco regained independence in 1956, the same flag continued to serve as the national flag of the kingdom. After independence it was also permitted to be used as the maritime flag.
