The national flag of the Philippines features a horizontal blue stripe above a red stripe with a white equilateral triangle at the hoist. Inside the triangle is a golden sun with eight rays and three five-pointed stars at each corner. The eight rays represent the first provinces that revolted against Spanish rule, while the three stars symbolize the country’s three main geographic regions: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. History of the Philippines flag

Creation of the flag

The Philippine national flag was first conceived by Emilio Aguinaldo, the leader of the Philippine Revolution.

It was sewn in Hong Kong by Marcela Agoncillo, her daughter Lorenza, and Delfina Herbosa de Natividad, a niece of national hero José Rizal.

The flag was first displayed in battle on May 28, 1898, during the Battle of Alapan in Cavite.

Declaration of independence

The flag was formally unfurled during the Philippine Declaration of Independence on June 12, 1898, at Aguinaldo’s residence in Kawit, Cavite.

The design included a sun with a face similar to the Sun of May, and with eight rays representing the first provinces that revolted against Spanish rule.

American colonial period

After the United States took control of the Philippines, the display of the Philippine flag was prohibited under the Flag Act of 1907.

The law was repealed in 1919, allowing the flag to be displayed again.

Standardization of the flag

In 1936, President Manuel L. Quezon issued Executive Order No. 23, which established the official proportions and design specifications of the Philippine flag.

These standards remain largely unchanged today.

World War II

During the Japanese occupation of the Philippines in World War II, the display of the Philippine flag was again restricted. It was later raised in 1943 during the establishment of the Second Republic of the Philippines.

During wartime, the Philippine flag is flown with the red stripe above the blue, a unique feature that signals that the country is in a state of war. After the liberation of the Philippines in 1945, the flag continued to be used until the country gained independence from the United States in 1946.
