Adopted in 1842, the national flag of Paraguay consists of three horizontal stripes of red, white, and blue. Red symbolizes patriotism, courage, and heroism, white represents unity, peace, and purity, and blue stands for freedom, knowledge, and truth. The front side of the flag features the national coat of arms, which displays a golden star surrounded by palm and olive branches and the inscription “Republic of Paraguay.” The reverse side displays the seal of the national treasury.

1. Paraguay officially adopted its current national flag on 25 November 1842.
2. The design closely resembles the tricolor flag first used shortly after Paraguay declared independence from Spain.
3. Paraguay is one of the few countries in the world whose flag has different designs on each side. Only the flags of Moldova and Saudi Arabia also have different designs on each side.
4. On the obverse side of the flag, the star represents the morning star associated with the independence movement of May 1811, while the palm and olive branches symbolize the nation’s historical achievements. The circular shape symbolizes God, who has neither beginning nor end.
5. The reverse side of the Paraguayan flag displays the seal of the national treasury. Independence and the tricolor
Paraguay declared independence from Spain in 1811.
In 1812, a red, white and blue tricolor flag began to be used as a symbol of the new nation.
This design remained in use during the rule of José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia, who governed Paraguay from 1814 to 1840.
Adoption of the official flag
On 25 November 1842, the Paraguayan Congress officially confirmed the tricolor as the national flag.
At the same time, two different emblems were added to the white stripe.
