History of Niger’s flag

Colonial period

Niger was part of French colonial territories in West Africa for much of its modern history. During this time, French national symbols were used to represent the territory.

Adoption of the national flag

The flag of Niger was designed in 1958 and officially adopted on 23 November 1959 by the Territorial Assembly, shortly before the proclamation of the Republic within the French Community in December of that year.

When Niger became fully independent in 1960, the same flag was retained as the national flag.

Meaning of the design

The Constitution describes the flag as three equal horizontal bands of orange, white, and green with an orange disc in the middle of the white stripe.

Official legislation does not appear to define the symbolism in detail, the orange stripe is widely associated with the Sahara Desert in northern Niger, the white stripe with purity and the country’s central belt, and the green stripe with the more fertile lands. The orange disc is generally interpreted as representing the sun.
